Mariëtte Sanders-van Gansewinkel, Fei 5 * judge, lives in Hoofddorp, The Netherlands. Her relationship with the equestrian world it’s a life-long story and it’d started when she was a baby. A passionate promoter of dressage as a sport that is made up of each of its players, she answered our questions

How and when did you meet horses? And where and why dressage?

«When I was 7/8 years old, I came into contact with horses (through family). I got my first pony when I was 11 years old. My instructor at the time didn’t like jumping. That’s why I stayed with dressage».

When did you become a dressage judge?

«1983. I was 18 years old at the time and was not allowed to ride due to an accident with a horse (knee ligaments torn). So I followed a judges course on the advice of Jan Peeters (deceased 5* Judge from The Netherlands)».

How did you career develop?

«In 1983 I became a National Judge. Since 1995, I have also worked as Course Director and Mentor for dressage judges. In 1999 I became a Candidate Fei Dressage Judge and in 2003 first FEI Young Horses Dressage Judge and then Fei International Judge. In 2007-2008 I was Team manager for the Dutch team. In 2015 I was awarded Fei 5 star judge status».

In your opinion how should be the relationship amongst judges and other stakeholders? (riders, Trainers, sponsor, media etc)

«More respect and appreciation for each other. Together we make the sport».

Do you have any worries when you are going to start judging a class?

«No»

Your hobbies?

«Besides my family (husband and 2 daughters, work (marketing manager) and horse (for my daughter) there is not much time left. I like cooking and good food, going to the movies and I really enjoy a good book».

Any suggestions to FEI regarding judges?

«As I mentioned before, together we make/are dressage. Riders, trainers, owners, judges and organizers. Let’s work together to continue enjoying this sport. The FEI can help us with this».
