Dressage.it interviews: Janet Foy

di Redazione

Very well-known 5 stars Fei Judge, Janet Foy is a very active member of the United Stated dressage world. Janet travels a lot up and down Us to spread dressage through her highly appreciated clinics

Where do you live?

«I live in Colorado Springs during the summer and Wellington, Florida during the ‘season’.  This is usually November to March».

How and when did you meet horses? And where and why dressage?

«My Austrian grandfather took me for my first riding lessons when I was 5 years old. He was a big fan of the Spanish Riding School». However, in Colorado at that time, there were only Western lessons available so that is how I started.  I showed in reining and was “The Girl of the West (a rodeo queen) in high school.

When did you become a dressage judge?

«I started dressage in Oxford, England with Molly Sivewright at the Talland School of Equitation.  My husband was a Rhodes Scholar and we lived in England for 3 years».

How did you career develop?

«I have a degree in Marketing and Public Relations.  When we returned to the US, I bought a horse and people saw me ride and asked me to teach them and train their horses, a new career was born! The Stakeholders are all equally important for the sport to succeed and thrive. We need to be respectful and helpful to each other. I see no reason for the negativity that comes from social media for judges or riders.  For our sport to remain in the Olympics, we need to have the best possible relationships and honesty».

Do you have any worries when you are going to start judging a class?

«My only worries are that the system doesn’t crash and that my scribe is good at typing and good at spelling! I am usually blessed with wonderful scribes».

Your hobbies?

«I love to read, which is good since I spend a lot of time on a plane. I also love gardening. But my real passion is Ballroom Dancing».

Any suggestions to FEI regarding judges?

«I hope the FEI keeps working on the education and the standards of the judges! I love my colleagues and enjoy sharing their knowledge when we work together on a panel.  We need to encourage young people to choose judging as a career path».
